What’s Exciting Under The Pixel 6’s Hood?
One of the main things that could make or break the Google Pixel 6 series of phones is the chip. The company announced in a blog post that the phones would be the first to feature Google’s Tensor, the company’s custom-built SoC specifically for Pixel phones. This is a huge departure from using third-party chipsets, as the company did with previous devices.

Google says that “Tensor enables us to make the Google phones we’ve always envisioned.” By that, the company means that it can create phones that use “the most powerful parts of Google.” It also pointed out that one of the most promising aspects of Tensor is that it can process Google’s AI and ML models directly on Pixel 6.
As the company is just previewing what’s to come, it didn’t detail the chip’s specs. However, if it’s appropriately tuned to work with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, I’m confident that it’ll run well on the devices.
Google says that the new Tensor chip will significantly improve speech recognition with the Pixel 6. It’ll be able to better handle voice commands, translation, captioning, and dictation.
Other device specs remain a mystery at this time. As Google gets closer to releasing the phone, we’ll hear about storage capacity, screens, RAM, and so on. For now, we’ll have to ponder exactly how this new chip will change Google’s smartphones and what it could change for the industry as a whole.
As far as the cameras go, Google announced that the Pixel 6 Pro has three cameras, one of which is a telephoto lens with a 4x optical zoom. It also says that the Pixel 6 features the same cameras, except for the telephoto lens. These cameras are tucked into the camera bar, which undoubtedly changes up the look of the phones.
Looks Really Do Matter
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro feature a distinctive look thanks to the camera bar on the back of the device. I’m confident this will be a divisive design choice, but personally, I like it. The camera on the back makes the phone stand out from the crowd. When you see it, you’ll know immediately that you’re looking at a Pixel 6 device.
Google announced that both the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro would come in three different color combinations, so you’ll have some basic and more exciting options to choose from.
Material You will be a big part of the look and feel of the latest Pixel devices. Google pointed out that “The colors, the camera, the form, and what’s on the screen all work together in a single, fluid experience” with Material You. So if you like cohesion in the look of your devices, the Pixel 6 might be perfect for you.
When Can You Get the Pixel 6 and for How Much?
All Google shared was that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro would arrive in the Fall of 2021. Unfortunately, the company didn’t share pricing information, so we’ll have to wait until closer to the release to see how much they’ll cost.
